Tuesday, March 20, 1945 pg. 2 “Gets Gold Bar” 2nd Lt. Baron D. Risling of Hoopa graduated March 11 from Foster Field, Texas, and received his commission while Texas observed Foster Field Day by proclamation of Gov. Coke Stevenson. Graduating were the members of the 35th and last class of aviation cadets to become the only installation in the AAF Central Flying Training Command to train more than 35 classes of fledgling pilots in the advanced single-engine airplane. From now on Foster Field’s mission is an AAF Fighter Gunnery School whose students are veteran pilots from all air forces. And a P-40 Transition and Gunnery School. Lt. Friday, March 23, 1945 pg. 12 Mr. and Mrs. David Risling of Hoopa have recently received a letter from their son, Lawrence (Jack) Risling, CM 1/c, with the Navy on Iwo Jima, the letter having been written about a month ago. It was also written to his wife, Joy, who lives at Hoopa. At that time, Risling relates, “I’m living in fox holes and eating field rations, heating it with canned heat. A kitchen is being set up, so we’ll soon be eating real food again. I’m still attached to the Fifth Marines. “Don’t worry about me as I am okay. My mail hasn’t caught up with me yet as I was at sea two months before landing here.” The chief petty officer is a brother Pfc. Leslie Risling, now with the 90th Division, Third Army, in Germany; Ensign David Risling in the South Pacific, and Lt. Baron Risling, who was recently commissioned at Porter Field, Texas. Tuesday, April 17, 1945 pg.1 “Hoopa Flyer: Killed In Crash” Lt. Baron D. Risling, 22, of Hoopa was killed in a plane crash yesterday some 20 miles north of Houston, Texas, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Risling of Hoopa. The officer graduated from Hoopa High school and trained at Independence, Kansas, at the Army Air Field. He was commissioned March 11 of this year at Foster Field at Victoria, Texas. Other relatives surviving are his brothers and sisters, Ensign David Risling on sea duty, Pfc. Leslie Risling in Europe, Lawrence Risling, CM 1/c with the Seabees on Iwo Jima, Anthony Risling of Hoopa, Vivian Hailstone, Viola Evans and Roslyn Marshall, all of Hoopa. |
