Wednesday, February 7, 1945 pg. 3 “Dies for Country: Citation to Mother” Mrs. Eva M. Simon of 414 West Harris street has recently received an accolade which pays homage to her youngest son, Floyd A. Simon, who lost his life May 17, 1943, in an air crash while in line of duty in the service of his country. The citation, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, reads: “In grateful memory of Floyd A. Simon, who died in the service of his country. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live and grow and increase its blessings. “Freedom lives and through it he lives in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.” Simon enlisted in the Navy when he was 18 years old and had served six years. Since the war began he had earned two promotions within six months, being chief radioman. He had received meritorious commendations for good conduct, fine individuality and efficiency. Mrs. Simon has another son in the Signal Corps on a ship in the Pacific, a grandson on Guam, another at Pearl Harbor, three more grandsons in varied branches of the service and a son-in-law in service. Everyone of them volunteered and enlisted. |
