Tuesday, July 3, 1945 pg. 3 “Pfc. Frank Lewis Reported Lost” FERNDALE, July 3.- Pfc. Frank Lewis, a Jap prisoner since 1942 when he was captured at Bataan and on the prisoner of war ship sunk in October of last year off the China coast, is presumably lost, according to a War Department message received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lewis. His brother, Cpl. Henry Lewis, is serving with an armored battalion and is now stationed in Germany. Through the Red Cross, parents of Pfc. Lewis had received three cards from him since last January, the last one arriving here May 25, which led them to believe he was safe. Frank Lewis, 24 years old, was born in Arcata and lived there until the family moved to Port Kenyon in 1939. He enlisted in April, 1941, and went to the Philippines in October of that year. Other surviving relatives are his brothers, Joseph Lewis, Jr., of Arcata and Albert Lewis of Port Kenyon. Requiem high mass will be conducted for the war hero Thursday morning at 9 o’clock in the Church of the Assumption, Ferndale. |
