“Missing Eurekan Was On Carrier U.S.S Franklin”
Signalman 2c Gerald R. Ackerman of Eureka, reported missing a month ago in a war department dispatch to his father, Arthur R. Ackerman of 1815 Williams street, was aboard the aircraft carrier Franklin when the ship was damaged off the coast of Japan. Ackerman is among the 1,000 or more casualties incurred during the Jap dive bomber attacks and the explosions of her own gasoline and bombs and the resulting fired.
Signalman Ackerman enlisted in the Navy on January, 1942 and has been at sea most of the time since then. He has served on “Big Ben” since the ship was commissioned in the east.
