Saturday, March 24, 1945 pg. 1 “Eurekan Killed: On Italian Front” Word has just been received by Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph B. Matsen of 3125 California street that their nephew, Pfc. Gilbert John Madsen, was killed in action in Italy, March 3. Pvt. Madsen entered the Army in July, 1943, and trained at Camp Abbott, Oregon, and at Camp Hale, Colorado. He was transferred to Camp Swift, Texas, where he trained with the 10th Light Division and went overseas in December, 1944. In civilian life Pvt. Madsen was employed by the Holmes Eureka Lumber company for two years. He was a member of the Sons of Norway Fram lodge and of Eagles lodge. Born in Norway 24 years ago, Madsen lived here with his uncle and aunt. His parents are still living in Norway. |
