“Rio Dell Youth Dies on Leyte”
RIO DELL, Jan. 4- Pfc. Jack Finley died November 17 on Leyte Island from wounds received the previous day, according to recent word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Finley of Rio Dell.
Surviving also are five brothers and four sisters. His brothers, Harold and Ray Finley are serving in the Navy and Marshall. Finley in the Merchant Marine.
Soon after Pfc. Finley was 18 years old he entered the Army in August, 1942. He trained on the Hawaiian Islands, participated in the Bougainville and Sapian campaigns and had been slightly wounded in a prior action on Leyte, recovering soon to return to active duty.
Born at Columbia, Louisiana, Finley moved to Humboldt County in 1937 and had been employed by the Pacific Lumber Company at Scotia.
