Lighter Than Air Base

Picture

The Naval Lighter Than Air Base at Samoa commenced operations on May 22, 1943 as a mooring place for blimps which patrolled the coast from Seattle to San Diego. Personnel stationed at the Naval Section Base were under orders to reconnoiter the Humboldt County coastline as a precaution against enemy submarines. When not in the air the blimps were anchored into the landing circles and tied down to secure them against the strong coastal winds.
