Monday, April 2, 1945 pg. 3 "Max H. Wagner: Killed On Iwo" Sgt. Max H. Wagner of Eureka, who fought with the 3rd Marine Division during the bloody battle for Iwo Jima, was killed in action there March 8. Sgt. Wagner, widely known in Eureka where he lived 10 years, enlisted in the Marine Corps three years ago and, after training, was gunnery instructor at the San Diego base for two years before being sent to the Pacific area. He came to Eureka from the east with his sister and father, the latter being superintendent of the Eureka Woolen Mills for several years. Surviving are his mother and sister, Mrs. M. H. Wagner and Miss Virginia Wagner, of Miami, Florida, and a sister, Mrs. W. A. Robinson of Oakland, who is returning within a few weeks to live in Eureka again. His brother, Lt. Robert Wagner, an Army pilot, was killed in combat action more than a year ago over France. |
