Wednesday, April 25, 1945 pg. 1 “Missing In Action: South Pacific Area” Raymond R. Viale, private first class in the United States Marine Corps, has been reported missing in action in the performance of his duty and service of his country, according to a telegram received today by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Viale, 2620 Hall avenue, Eureka, from the commandant of the Marine Corps. “I realize your great anxiety,” the telegram said, “but details are not available and delay in receipt thereof must be expected.” Viale enlisted in the Marines on August 29, 1943, and went overseas in the Pacific area in July, 1944. He was a member of Company I, Third Battalion 26th Marines, Fifth Division, which invaded Iwo Jima. Before entering the service, Viale was employed by the Eureka Newspapers, Inc., in the circulation department. |
