Saturday, January 13, 1945 pg. 3 “Wounded in Action” FERNDALE, Jan. 13. - State Sgt. Tony Louis Gomes, 20, was wounded December 25 during action at Luxembourg and is hospitalized, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gomes of Ferndale. Sgt. Gomes entered the army in March, 1943, and has been overseas five months. He trained with a tank destroyer group at Camp Hood, Texas, and was transferred to the infantry. While overseas he received the combat infantry badge and was promoted from private first class to staff sergeant. The young soldier attended Rio Dell school and was employed in civilian life by the Pacifica Lumber company, Scotia. Humboldt Standard Saturday, March 10, 1945 pg. 3
“Killed In Action” Staff Sergeant Tony Gomes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luis Gomes of Ferndale, was killed in action in Germany, February 11, according to word received by his parents from the War Department. He was wounded December 35 and after 18 days in a hospital he recovered and went back to the fighting front. Besides his parents he leaves his brother, Ezedro, three sisters, Mary, Evelyn, and Grace. Leaving here on March 9, 1942 he trained with the tank destroyers in Camp Hood, Texas. He was 20 years old and had been overseas for six months. |
