Saturday, April 7, 1945 pg. 3 “Arcata Marine: Killed On Iwo” According to a telegram from the war department to his widow, Norma, Pvt. Warren H. Smith of Arcata was killed on Iwo Jima during an engagement with the enemy March 7, just one week before his 24th birthday. Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Smith of Arcata, was reared and educated in the schools of Arcata. Before induction into the Marine Corps in April, 1944, he was employed by the California Barrel Co. of Arcata and the Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. of Eureka. He made his home with his parents. Besides his widow, father and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Joyce 3, and Judy, 8 months, a brother, Lawrence Smith of Samoa and a sister Mrs. Hazel Anderson of Eureka. |
