Saturday, May 26, 1945 pg. 1 “Former Eurekan: Dies On Luzon” Private Manuel S. Simas, former Eurekan, died on April 10 on the island of Luzon from wounds suffered in action that day, according to War Department report received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Manuel S. Simas, who now reside at Kingsburg. Young Simas died just two days before his twenty-second birthday. He entered the army on July 24, 1944, and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, leaving for overseas service last January. He was born at Elk River in Humboldt County, went to school at Beatrice and Eureka High, and moved to Fresno County with his parents four years ago. He and his father had been operating a dairy at Kingsburg. He was a member of the Portuguese lodge, IDES, of Eureka. Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Joseph and four sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Brower, Mary Lela, and Julia Simas, all of Kingsburg. He was the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dutra of Elk River, and of Mr. and Mrs. Joaquin Martin of Fortuna. HE has several cousins in Humboldt County, and many relatives in the southern part of California and in Portugal. |
